An alleged gangster, in court for various cases including several charges of murder, has had his bail revoked.
He will now remain in custody until his most recent trial concludes in the Gqeberha high court.
On Wednesday, Deilon Makoppa’s lawyer, advocate Johan van der Spuy, confirmed to the court that his client would not oppose the application for his bail to be forfeited to the state.
In that matter, Makoppa and Christiano Witbooi face one count of murder, three of attempted murder, two counts of contravening the prevention of the Organised Crime Act and illegal possession of a firearm and ammunition.
It is alleged that during the early hours of July 4 2022, Makoppa and Witbooi approached a group of men about to exit a block of flats in Glendenning Street, Schauderville.
According to the state, Makoppa opened fire on the four men, who fled in different directions.
When the men returned, they found Brent Antonio lying on the steps of the block of flats.
Antonio was taken to hospital, where he died of a gunshot wound to the upper right thigh.
According to the indictment, Antonio was allegedly a member of the Ah Shene/China gang, while Makoppa and Witbooi were members of the notorious Spotbouers gang.
Makoppa was arrested on July 7 and later released on bail, while Witbooi was arrested a week later and has been in custody since.
That trial has been set down for September 2.
No stranger to run-ins with the law, Makoppa was previously charged with the November 19 2016 kidnapping and murder of Mohammed Gamieldien, and the murder of Deon Matthys on the same day.
He and his co-accused in that matter, Kurt Bosman, were acquitted.
In a more recent case Makoppa, former police officer Rudy Arends and suspected gangster Clinton Minnies are accused of the December 30 2022 murder of Raul Damons, who was shot dead in his Aalwyn Drive home in Kariega.
Minnies and Makoppa were arrested in January and September, respectively, while Arends was arrested in November.
All three men were denied bail and are expected back in court on March 18.
